Knitting legacy across a century of craftsmanship

What is jersey fabric?

Jersey fabric is a fabric where the fibers are knit together (as opposed to woven together). It is the structure of the knit that allows for the fabric to have stretch, not the fiber itself. That is why you can have, for example, cotton fabrics in jersey which stretch (e.g., t-shirts), while cotton in woven fabrics does not (e.g., quilting fabric).

Known for its comfort, jersey fabrics can be made from a blend of fibers. Common fibers for jersey are cotton, lycra, polyester, wool and viscose. These fabrics can be knit in different ways to produce lighter or heavier weight fabrics, with more or less stretch. Single knit jersey is lightweight, interlock jersey is more stable and heavier with good stretch recovery. Both are suitable for a variety of clothing including undergarments and childrenswear. Ribbing knit fabric is good for cuffs at the bottom of sweatshirts and coats, or anywhere you want to bring a loose-fitting item in to be tighter while still being able to stretch.

At Omniteksas, we are a jersey manufacturer. We create our jersey blends of different fibers and knit structures for a variety of fabrics for clothes from fashion brands to uniform base layers for military and law enforcement and anything in between.

How can jersey fabrics be used?

Jersey fabrics are most suitable for clothing. As jersey has stretch and is soft, it is one of the most worn clothes fabrics today. Jersey clothing material is used for t-shirts, sweatshirts, leggings, fitness apparel, swimwear, childrens and baby clothing, pyjamas, undergarments and more.

Most fabrics for clothes that stretch are jersey. A whole garment can be cut from the same jersey, or sometimes different types and weights of jersey can be used for different features. For example, an interlock jersey has good stretch and recovery – great for waistbands of pull-on bottoms, ribbing creates a cuff on a mitten, decorative jersey panels on leggings, or a skirt made from layers of lightweight jersey. Fashion designers love the soft drape of single jersey for womens dresses and tops.

Caring for jersey garments is easy – it can be machine washed and tumble dried. Heavier jersey fabrics don’t wrinkle much at all.
